initial idea

Danielle approached me about working on the Winter 2021 Art Crawl Cover Art. She discussed how the pandemic and the shut downs had put a pause on people getting out and seeing art in gallery spaces. She wanted to incorporate some themes we’ve all been experiencing over he past year into this character I’ve been developing. This cute little guy that I’ve been playing with has been refined over time. Tho he is mostly drawn in black on white and I have been experimenting with filling him in with color and textures of paper. At first I was going to collage a hand with a swab but then I got the idea to just use my hand glove with a swab.

Collaboration

Aside from the nasal swab idea Danielle also wanted to incorporate the theme of “Pause” and a bit of bright color to this seasons edition. This is how we came upon the decision to use the space in the characters eye to hold the classic “Pause” symbol. Danielle picked up the colors I used for the interior spread and carried that color theme to the cover and used the other accent colors to highlight the little fella.

And of course, they too must wear masks when in public.
